Meet Tiana Pazdirek

March 2023 Edition

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Name: Tiana Pazdirek (She/Her)
BCITMA Position: VP of BCITMA

Why did you join the BCITMA?
"I joined BCITMA to put my newly acquired marketing skills into action! I wanted to apply my learnings into real-life scenarios and take advantage of all the amazing opportunities the club provides its students & members. In addition, I wanted to build my network and nurture relationships with my peers in a different setting outside of a classroom.”

What does your role look like as a VP of your committee?
”My role as Vice President in short entails being in constant communication with Executives, working closely with the President to address any obstacles or opportunities for the club, and developing the Chapter Plan and Annual report for the BCITMA.

Do you have any experiences you would like to share from your time as a VP?
There have been several impactful experiences with BCITMA over my duration with the club, however, my favourite would have to be taking part in the Sophos industry tour. It was incredible going to the office space of this tech company with a handful of BCIT students and MA members, experiencing the inside workings of the business and hearing from industry professionals. This tour provided me with inspiring advice as a marketing student transitioning into the industry and an inside look into the different opportunities available to me after I graduate. Overall it was an experience that couldn’t have been taught in a classroom, which grew my appreciation for the BCITMA even more.

How do you keep your personal and work/school life balanced?
It is definitely a challenge managing my work/ life balance, however, there are some tips and tricks I have gained over my time at BCIT that has helped.

1. Keep an agenda. Whether it is online or physical, block out your time and ensure you are incorporating breaks. This ensures you are giving your brain time to rest and actually comprehend all the information you have been learning.
2. Communicate your boundaries and be realistic with what you can take on as a team member or individual. Everyone has a different size plate that they can load up, and we all know BCIT is an all-you-can-eat buffet, therefore only you know your limits and to be able to communicate that will save you from problems down the road and added stress you don’t need.
3. Let go of perfectionism. It gets in the way of your development and sets unrealistic expectations. Be gentle to yourself and remember that as long as you are doing the best that you, that is all anyone can ask of you.

Can you share what you’ve learned so far with BCITMA?
”Stay organized! Take every opportunity that is presented to you. And sign up for the BCITMA in your first year to elevate your learning from the get-go. A 2-year program flies by and you want to take advantage of the hard and soft skills this club provides you!”

Any tips or tricks you would like to share with Marketing students?
Stay open-minded and lean into your relationship with both your peers and teachers. Even though BCIT is fast-paced and asks a lot from students we are capable of more than we think, so stay open to opportunities to learn and take on additional responsibilities to grow you professional skillset. Lastly, both students and teachers are incredible resources as they will aid in your development and potentially provide you with opportunities in the future!”
