Member of the Month: Jericho Fillon

Meet Jericho Fillon, December’s BCITMA member of the month! While studying Computer Science Technology at BCIT, he has also taken on the role of Lead Web Designer for the BCITMA. You’re most likely reading this right now on the slick new BCITMA website he recently led the redesign for!

What made you interested in joining the BCITMA?

“My best friend Eileen introduced me to the BCITMA as she is currently VP of the Membership Committee and they were looking for someone familiar with web technologies. That certain someone turned out to be me! As a hobby, I stay engaged in web development by consistent practice of turning product mock-ups to code which proved to be good preparation for an opportunity to be the Lead Web Designer for the BCITMA!”

What have you taken on thus far in your role with the BCITMA?

“In my role as the Lead Web Designer, I was responsible for the UI/UX layout. Referencing wireframes to implement designs into applicable layouts, providing insight on interaction and user flows. On certain sections of the site, I incorporated CSS grid + flexbox for responsive web design, dynamically changing to display correctly in all viewports. I was also responsible for identifying and debugging all bugs to ensure a smooth user experience flow.”

How long have you been involved with programming/development? What interests you the most about it?

“It’s been 2 years since I’ve been involved with programming, taking my first course in the spring of 2018. I was eager to turn ideas and imaginations to life, and programming bridged that gap for me. What I find most interesting about technology is that it resembles a blank canvas. As I incorporate art and design, I’m certain I can create whatever I set my mind to.”

What / who did you look to for inspiration for the BCITMA website redesign?

“The redesign was 100% a team effort. I would like to give a shoutout to Brendan, Eileen, Erin, Aron, and the rest of the Digital Media Committee for doing an amazing job. I couldn’t have done it without them. I looked for inspiration through the recommendations from the team. Brendan created brilliant wireframes that lead to the intuitive UI/UX featured on the site. The rest is history.”

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

“There’s so much I want to do in the next 5 years, one of them being a leader and mentor for technology in my local community.”

If you could advise future students at BCIT, especially in your program, what would it be?

“Consistently build applications, especially the ones you’re passionate about. My professor Jason Harrison encourages us to build always. It works, trust me. As you build, tinker, reverse-engineer, you incorporate problem-solving skills taught at BCIT, with external help from others and Google, to strengthen your knowledge. Another benefit is to showcase projects you’re proud of creating, to your family, friends, and potential employers!”

If you could travel (in a post-Covid sense!) anywhere in the world, where would you go?

“Mykonos, Greece. In love with the white and blue.”
