Every year the Events Committee puts together a Fashion Show, and it is somewhat different from the other BCITMA events that you’re used to. There are no industry speakers. It is not primarily about career training, or gaining skills. It does have networking (more on that later).
Instead, the fashion show is about having a great time. It is about bringing people together, for the sake of celebrating the vibrant artistic scene right here in Vancouver. It is about recognizing how BCIT students almost never get a chance to party, and giving you a chance to do just that.
And finally, it is about you. This year’s fashion show is inspired by the simple human desire to let loose and discover who you really are. Interested? Then read on!
Cypher: Unveiling the Underground
The theme of this year’s Fashion Show is streetwear, inspired by the casual-yet-edgy culture of hip-hop music videos and gritty industrial parks. To unveil the underground means to show the world as it truly is, which is exactly what you’ll see with many of the fashion brands displayed at this show (keep reading for a description). Streetwear is about life in its raw and unfiltered form: heading onto the streets and working hard everyday to achieve your goals.
Which is why it is fitting that Cypher actually takes place in a warehouse. Located in the Pipe Shop in North Vancouver, the venue is located near a shipyard; a perfect place to showcase the gritty designs that you will see at the show. Don’t expect a glamourous runway-style event like last year; what you will get is an authentic experience that incorporates the unique streetwear culture of Vancouver.
Similarly, we invite all attendees to embrace the rebelliousness of street fashion and wear whatever makes them comfortable. Part of streetwear means bringing out your true personality, unfettered by the expectations; so come to Cypher and showcase the person you never knew you were!
Of course, no event would be complete without food and entertainment. Various food trucks will be stationed at the show to provide a taste of the local delicacies of Vancouver. Steam Whistle Brewery will also be on hand to provide drinks, as well as confections from Sweets and Confections Co. by Max Huang. Entertainment will be provided by local DJ Avstin James, who will be spinning the beats that perfectly complement the casual vibe of Cypher.
The Fashion Brands
Vancouver has a very vibrant fashion scene. The BCITMA has partnered with local fashion brands to showcase some of the hottest streetwear designs coming straight out of Vancouver. In fact, that is another purpose for the Fashion Show: to provide exposure for the many creative fashion boutiques based right here in our city. We are a marketing club, after all – it just so happens that this time we are marketing fashion and a great time.
Here is a look at some of the fashion brands that you can expect to see at Cypher:
Blackmerle fashion is simultaneously confident and rebellious, for the people who know themselves yet also don’t. If that sounds philosophical, then you have grasped the essence of Blackmerle: this brand is all about self-reflection and finding your own life purpose. Named after a black dog with very irregular fur patterns, Blackmerle fashion is for the people who are confident in themselves and are not afraid to let other people know it.
Broken Halo Boutique
If you haven’t guessed from the name, Broken Halo Boutique is all about bringing out the bad boy or girl in you. Broken Halo Boutique’s motto is that “being bad has never looked this good”: the company handcrafts jewelry that brings out the individual in you, free of the need to conform or be proper (to be “good”, so to speak). Rebellious, mischievous and just a bit devilish, Broken Halo Boutique proves that sometimes it is good to be bad.
Dedication and loyalty are the theme behind Frontrvnner’s line of streetwear, which includes shirts, jerseys, hoodies and caps. The company believes in a single-minded pursuit of a person’s own passion in order to achieve their goals. Being loyal, passionate and dedicated – that’s how you become a Frontrvnner.
Loyal Coalition is a casual clothing brand that sells premium products for both men and women. Don’t let the term “casual” mislead you though: Loyal Coalition was born out of a dedication to fashion and a strict adherence to personal principles. The company started because its two founders were unhappy with the immorality in their previous jobs; this was the beginning of #loyalteam, a group of people who strive to remain true to their principles and support the local community, no matter what.
Minty Clothing Co.
Minty Clothing is exactly as the name suggests: casual fashion that makes you feel fresh, cool and stylish – all at the same time. This brand’s style is simple and eminently customizable, with a series of basic essentials that can be worn together to create many unique styles. Wearing Minty Clothing fashion is to bring out the creative artist within you.
Whether you are always on the move or just want to look like you do, Nomad Collective has the clothing that is right for you. To be nomadic means to never settle down in one place for long, which is fitting for the adventurous aesthetics of Nomad Collective. The company’s line of active and casual wear feature hand-drawn designs and a travel motif to truly bring out the adventurer in you.
Self Hired is a lifestyle fashion brand. Besides a line of urban-themed clothing, the company also has its own production studio that channels the urban lifestyle into creative content, such as music videos and promotional clips. Self Hired’s motto is “Don’t talk about it, be it”; the brand promotes fashion as a state of mind whereby you commit yourself entirely to personal endeavours.
Sleepless Mindz is all about your personal passion that keeps you up at night. Being sleepless means you have a dream, something that you want to do; Sleepless Mindz fashion urges you to embrace freedom and follow your aspirations, even if everyone else does not approve. The company lives its motto: the clothing offered by Sleepless Mindz is itself a result of many sleepless nights and hard work.
Stndrd Issue prides itself on being a nation of like-minded individuals. Those who are part of the Stndrd nation believe that fashion inspires; looking good is not enough, proper fashion should give a personal statement to everyone you meet. The company’s fashion is bold, designed to stand out and represent the North West community.
Simplicity and authenticity are the driving considerations behind Velt’s line of backpacks. The company designs backpacks from the ground-up to fit the end user: they are functional and durable, with a minimalism that adds sophistication without sacrificing comfort. Everything from the location of the pockets to the zippers is built with a purpose in mind, to improve the daily life of users.
After the Show
After every show comes the after party, a place for everyone to unwind, connect with other attendees and have fun. This Fashion Show is no different – except we have a number of post-show events planned so that you can make the most of your night out on the town.
For the BCITMA, networking is synonymous with just about any event that we organize. The Fashion is a great opportunity to meet new people, as it brings together fashion designers, event sponsors and over 300 attendees all in the same place. If you’re the kind of person who wants to form new connections but dislikes the uptight atmosphere and stilted conversations of many networking events, you’ll find that Cypher provides the perfect opportunity for you to network in a casual setting.
After the networking session comes the real party. Your ticket to the Fashion Show includes free cover to YEEZY night; Fortune Sound Club has invited all Cypher attendees to the exclusive party, a tribute night dedicated to the music of Kanye West. So while you may not be celebrating Kanye West’s presidency (yet), get ready to rock out to some his hottest tracks all night.
This year’s fashion show promises to be another massive event, bringing together the best of local fashion and industry connections in an urban setting that is both edgy and refreshing. Get ready for a fun experience that is like nothing you have experienced before!
