The work of Brian Tang is one that any observant BCIT student would be no stranger to. You’ve probably seen the Movember posters and the Term 2 Kick-Off Party posters. You’ve definitely seen the amazing 2016 Regional Conference poster and even oogled at the stunning Vancouver graphic. All those snazzy posters around campus and social media that help the BCITMA illustrate & execute events and draw your attention in to attend are done by Brian, the VP of Ads & Promo, with the help of his trusty creative committee.
For a club that puts on so many different events, it is important to keep promotional material fresh and exciting. Brian does a great job at keeping the BCITMA Ads & Promo interesting with just the right amount of content to highlight key information. These ads serve as a great first impression and represent the BCITMA as a club to be interested in!
In addition, Brian works with many of the other committees and serves as the bridge between the Events Committee and the Digital Media Committee. After all, where would he be without events to promote and digital media mediums to promote on. Team work really is the dream work here at the BCITMA!
- What brought you here to BCIT?
I ate every flavour of Miss Vickies’ chips and Doritos so I needed a new challenge. Ok, really though, I graduated and got my Bachelor’s Degree, but went working (not within my field) for a year or so. Since I had an English degree (I’ll pause for laughter), a lot of people wanted more relevant and precise experience. Lots of people appreciated the communication skills, but I lacked knowledge in their particular industry.
- What has been a better experience so far, first year or second year?
Gonna have to say second year. It’s more focused in what I want to be doing after I’m done here and I’m surrounded by more like-minded individuals in that regard. It’s tougher in that the workload is more than just schoolwork (especially since we’re in MA), but it’s even more rewarding. First year is so awesome because you’re testing everything and getting your feet wet with different kinds of people, but it’s second year where you make your bread and butter.
- Help! I’m a first year deciding on a BCITMA Committee to join. Why should I choose Ads and Promo?
Do you want a career in advertising? Do you want to learn how to write and craft pitches and briefs? Do you want to use Adobe’s suite of awesome programs? Do you want to get to meet me? No? Ok, I’ll carry on then.
- What skills have you learned from your position as the VP of Ads and Promo will you carry on into the future?
Definitely the experience with the Adobe suite. And learning how to manage my own time. In this role, you have to get involved and have an understanding of everything going in MA. It’s tough to juggle everything and keeping everyone happy, but it’s also such a nice feeling when you’re done. You learn how fast you can turn something around. Sometimes it takes weeks, sometimes just a day. Really depends.
- Lastly, what is the number one thing you are looking forward to after graduation?
Buying a big fancy steak dinner with the first real, big boy, grownup pants paycheck I get.
Now if that’s not dreaming big, I don’t know what is!! Thanks for taking the time, Brian!!
