The BCITMA is involved with many aspects of the business and professional world. One of the most exciting is in the capacity of ad hoc consulting team for local businesses. Each year the MA takes on clients and helps them to achieve real results. Making the task more important, services are exchanged for fees that go towards club funding. As you can see, the job is an important one, and it is undertaken under the leadership of VP of Corporate relations, Jenny Chen.
Jenny is a second-year Marketing Communications student with a BA from the University of British Columbia. Last year, as Director of Business Development, she gained valuable experience leading a team for a business-consulting project. Additionally, she competed in the Marketing Strategy and SABRE competition at the annual American Marketing Association Collegiate Conference.
Jenny’s goal for this year has been to find engaging clients and projects for the different business development teams. These projects provide students with the unique opportunity to work for established industry professionals while gaining real-life experience.
The teams meet with clients and discuss progress and set goals throughout the span of the projects. For 2014/15, the team is working on two different projects, led by two student directors, Suzi Au and Jonathan Krawchuck.
Due to the nature of consulting projects, we are unable to disclose specific details regarding the projects. However, here is a breakdown of who and what each team is working on….
VSSL is a company that specializes in outdoor utility tools that highlight sleek design and practical functionality. The company initiated a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2014, and now the ball is rolling with more attention than ever. The company hired the BCITMA to work on establishing a voice to nurture a growing community. With a target audience of outdoor enthusiasts to reach, the MA has been tasked to create an online strategy and engagement plan.

With an intuitive interface and people-centered technology, they are able to transform numbers and figures into useable information that powers impactful decisions. This year the company has hired the BCITMA to optimize their sales process by educating about the product, and ultimately strengthening brand awareness.

The BCITMA thanks the Corporate Relations Committee, and we are truly excited to see each member learn and grow with the process. We have seen first-hand how much work they’ve put into these businesses, treating them as if they were their own. It is an impressive undertaking to move from theory to practice without even finishing their degrees yet, but we can always count on this committee to prove why BCIT students are so in demand.
